With the exception of 1996, Germany has participated in every Eurovision Song Contest since its beginning in 1956. No other country has been represented as often. Despite a high participation record, Germany has only won one contest, in 1982. Germany, along with the United Kingdom, France and Spain, nis one of the "Big Four" countries that are automatically qualified to the final, regardless of the placing. This is due to being the largest financial contributors to the contest. The Eurovision Song Contest semi-final is broadcast on NDR Fernsehen and the final is broadcast on Das Erste, the flagship channel of ARD.

List of German Participants on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest

Eurovision: Moscow 2009
German News: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/news?id=2625

Germany's Entry: Alex Swings Oscar Sings! We can already get to know their interests, and hopefully, more informed matches will follow.
It is very important to us that the exchange be the most amazing experience of your child’s career.
Please consider hosting!

Where? Tremper, room 208
When? Thursday, May 28th,
at 6pm

Wurstfest 5/14

Tremper’s German Program will be hosting its 3rd Annual Wurstfest. We just can’t get enough bratwurst, oom-pah-pah music and dirndls in October!
We are in need of parent volunteers for setup (10:00 a.m.-11:15 a.m.), sales (11:00 a.m.—1:30 p.m.) and cleanup (1:30-finish). Please email Frau Orth if you can help out!
jorth@kusd.edu

Congratulations!

I have never, ever been so proud in my entire career as I am of my students today. Tremper has never placed in the top 5 at German Day, and this year we won 2nd! We've always competed just for the fun of it. But this year was different. We fielded two AMAZING skits. During practices, I never once had to remind the students to learn their lines or bring in props or costumes. Everyone knew where their props were and took responsibility and pride in their work. I'm so thrilled that we were recognized for our efforts. We also had two musical performances, one solo "Du bist die Ruh'" by Sarah J. and the birthday song "Viel Glück und Viel Segen", sung in a round by my German 101's. The competition is supposed to start at Level 2 German, but I like to take my 101's to get their feet wet. They did a great job!Three German 202/302 students even spelled their way to first place! Very impressive, since spelling is often the competition where schools fall farthest in standing.Students will also perform and receive certificates at our banquet on May 29th.

5th Annual German Awards Banquet

Join us on Friday, May 29th at 6 p.m. in Tremper’s Cafeteria for the celebration of our achievements in German. There will be entertainment for all, so bring the whole family and a dish to pass.
RSVP: jorth@kusd.edu

jammie@orths.com (J. It is based on the play by Frank Wedekind. Read about it online:
The Playbill: http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119821.html
The Text: http://www.martinschlu.de/kulturgeschichte/neunzehntes/spaetromantik/wedekind/werke/fruehling/11.htm

The play deals with teens coming of age. It takes place in 1890 and was originally banned in the US for content. I believe it will be controversial still today. Nevertheless, it is always nice to see that German culture makes it across the Atlantic.

jammie@orths.com (J. Get the Facts!
Need a little advice in signing up for courses for next year? You’re in luck! German is offered up to level 6, so sign up!
The Block Schedule can be confusing for everyone. Students have to sign up for the entire next school year, and almost all course offerings depend on enrollment. Frau Orth’s advice? Look in the course catalogs (all possible courses for Tremper High School are on kusd.edu) and sign up for what you want. When Frau Orth was in high school, Bradford offered Aviation. Enough people signed up for it, and her best friend learned to fly that year.
So sign up for German! But how much? Below are listed two possible sequences for learning German.
For High Achievers:
Freshman Year: 101, 102
Sophomore Year: 201, 202
Junior Year: 301, 302
Senior Year: Student Partnership

For Students wishing to have German throughout High School:
Freshman Year: 101, 102 or Freshman Year: 101
Sophomore Year: 201, 202 Sophomore Year: 102
Junior Year: 301 Junior Year: 201, 202
Senior Year: 302 Senior Year: 301

For Students in Music or other electives:
Freshman Year: 101, 102
Sophomore Year: 201
Junior Year: 202 (spring)
Senior Year: 301

Kenosha-Wolfenbüttel Student Exchange

Students from Kenosha’s Sister City, Wolfenbüttel, wil be visiting this October for 2 weeks.
25 students from three Wolfenbüttel high schools will be living with Kenosha families, going to school daily and taking part in field trips. In order to keep this exchange successful, we will need Bradford and Tremper families to host. This is not without its rewards! In June of 2010, our own students will have the opportunity to live in a German home, visit school in Germany and do a bit of travel.
Kenosha has very strong ties to its Sister City in Germany. There have been exchanges between soccer teams, choirs, orchestras and language students. The Sister City Association even organizes an adult exchange.
Any families interested in hosting or sending their own child on this valuable program can contact Frau Orth.Fundraising will begin soon for the 2009-2010 exchange with a spaghetti-os and mac’ n’ cheese lunch on March 23rd. Mrs. S. will be coordinating that fundraiser. Students wishing to take part in the fundraiser must already have filled out a student exchange application / information sheet.
Frau Orth is also in search of a parent willing to coordinate either candy or granola bar fundraiser, starting asap.

German Club and Extra Curricular German

This school year, German Club has been working toward redefining itself. We have had advisory meetings, after school meetings, made posters, and planned a friendly game of dodge ball against Italian Club.
This spring, we have some events on the calendar for everyone. There will be another Wurstfest, where we will be selling quality German food at lunch. Parents are needed to supervise the sale. Also this spring, we will be competing in the Speaking Contest and German Day in Madison. UW Madison also puts on a play in German. Anyone interested is welcome to come along.
Club has been working on having “meetings” be more interactive. They want to show movies, music videos, teach and learn language. In December we sang Christmas carols at St. Joe’s Nursing Home.

AATG National Exam

Last winter, the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) National German Exam was administered. Students took a multiple choice and an essay exam in German language. Students placing in the 70th percentile or above or who have written an exceptional essay can win monetary awards as well as a free study trip to Germany. This year we tried something new. Although the tests start at what they call “Level 2”, 10 students at the 101 level took the test. I am proud to announce that two of those students placed exceptionally high for their placement in German, after having just barely more than 2 months of German. Congratulations!
K.G.
C.S.

At Level 3, two students placed above the 70th percentile. Congratulations!
C.B.
A.D.

At level 4, we congratulate three students.
K.R.
J.S.
B.D.

The AATG and DSSV will hold a contest award ceremony on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 3pm at Marquette University High School Auditorium. Invitations will be sent early in spring.
Additional information about the exam is available on the AATG website: aatg.org.

jammie@orths.com (J.
